Laugh With MicCheck12 (#Futureiceprincelines & Banky W’s Head)

Welcome to the maiden edition of Laugh With MicCheck12. This is a new series of posts on MicCheck12, which will highlight some very funny music related stuff in Nigeria. Our sources will most often than not, come from Twitter – so you could always verify yourself.

To start this, I’ll be making reference to 2 topics which have trended on Twitter, one being more recent than the other:

A. #Futureiceprincelines

This particular topic actually inspired this series. When I saw the tweets, I laughed so hard, I was almost literally rolling on the floor. Its so painful I couldn’t post this at the time when it was trending. Right now, the topic doesn’t come up when you search Twitter for it. Hence, I was only able to get a few of the lines. I really don’t know what Ice Prince did to people to deserve this. Anyways, below are the lines (and authors) I could find:

1. @Lumi_dee: Hot Tea poured on my body.. T-Pain Continue reading

Very Dumb Illegal Music 2 Reviews

“These critics reviewing shit, booing shit they don’t understand:they closed minded”

-M.I. (Pain Ft. Pope)

It’s like M.I. picked those words right outta my mouth. If you read this blog frequently, you’ll notice I haven’t posted anything in a while cause I’ve been extremely busy. But after reading a couple of Illegal Music 2 (IM2) reviews, I had to make an exception (even though MicCheck12′s review of IM2 isn’t ready yet). You see, it is blogs like these that give we bloggers a bad name because it’s obvious they don’t know much about hip hop (not just rap). But they feel since they purchased a domain name and perhaps hosting for a certain period, they’re licensed to publish RUBBISH!!!! Continue reading

6 ARTISTES TO BLOW UP IN 2012

Hey y’all. Hopefully everyone is doing alright? No? Comment below, I’m sure we can work something out. Cool? Hehe. So, unto the business of this article – we gon be looking at the next big things, or better still, acts on the Nigerian music scene. They already out there but I say next big ‘cause they’ve not being formally introduced into the industry. Formal introduction being the release of a studio album and all the activities that go with it. Such activities include radio tours, album launch etc.

These artistes are going to be responsible for the biggest concerts this year; selling out Eko Hotel. They gon be headlining shows, lurking on billboards and our TV screens.  We probably gon catch a parent humming their song or some wayward instrumentalist playing their tune during church service. Basically, these artistes would become a part of everything related to us ‘cause they’ve got that ish, that magic formula, and are not hesitating in using it on us.  Since we’ve settled that they have abilities, let’s have a quick run through of the criteria by which we would choose and rank these artistes.

Firstly, singles; what songs of theirs are doing damage to airwaves; on radio, streets, clubs etc. Secondly, collaborations; artistes must have featured (or being on the songs of other) notable artistes. This is a technique that helps build their brand, fan base and music. Lastly, their album is to be released this year; 2012 A.D. No need for a definite date here and the album is gotta be the first the artiste is putting out ever (mix tapes don’t count). Remember, they are ‘new’ artistes.

The list, ladies and gentlemen.

 6. MAY D

may d

May D, full name Awodunmila Akinmayokun Olusegun, is quite the crooner. With collaborations with P Square, Show Dem Camp, Akon etc. the heights this brother can reach are quite unknown. His hit singles are “Ilejo”, “Soundtrack” which are only a recent few out of a many Continue reading

5 TOP NIGERIAN ARTISTES AND THEIR CROSSES

Top 5 Nigerian Artistes & their crossess

Hey y’all. When I say crosses, I wish I was talking jewelry like them Jesus pieces but Mm hmmn, that’s not the case. So y’all know, like musicians all over the world, Nigerian artistes are always on the lips, in the eyes and minds of the general public (cutting across whatsoever demography); fans and haters alike.  Therefore, it’s no surprise really, that as soon as the public is done feeling; listening, watching etc, their works; music, they move on to ‘less creative’ issues Continue reading

The M. I. Guide To Successful Marketing

It was December 2008, Christmas was around the corner and I was at that period, listening to Mode9′s Paradigm Shift CD. As a Modey fan, I was feeling the album but just out of curiosity, I searched online for the album review to see what fellow rap heads were saying about it

M. I.

M. I.

People were feeling it as expected but I was shocked when I saw the following comment on a hip hop forum:

“I love Mode9. He should be the second best rapper in Nigeria right after MI”

My jaws dropped because I follow hip hop forums a lot and I have never heard anybody who loves Mode9, rate any rapper in the country above him. It must be “Personal Opinion”, I said to myself. But to my surprise Continue reading

The Production List – TPL (10 Best Nigerian Producers)

So many lists exist and I’m sure by now you would be bored with yet another one. Which begs the question- What is T.P.L? T.P.L. is a sort of guideline; a manual as to who is who as far as production goes in Nigeria. It encompasses the milestones both past and current and perhaps yet to be ascertained future of every producer in Nigeria. And though this list is not exhaustive, it is however moderate and thoroughly screened to accommodate a selective few out of the many producers that abound in Nigeria.

It begins with the stellar list that contains the very best the country has to offer as at now, detailing every prominent event that might have led them there. This means that this list mainly and in fact accurately judges the stellar candidates based on their individual milestones and achievements in whatever capacity and most importantly judges them based on their talents (repertoire), amount of hits (Hit Factory), Critical Acclaim and body of work as regards spread and volume (Prolificacy).

Like I noted above, this list is not all inclusive but moderately trimmed due to the available spaces (10). This affected the choice of future position on this list, yes, this list has a high predictive value i.e. we envisage that come next year this list may not really change and if it does the better. Due to the constraints listed above, we made some moderations and gave nods to producers who we anticipate may make the future list (Bubbling Under), others who are not notable now but were a force then and can sense their upward and steady revival (Relics) and those who are coming up the ranks with blistering pace.

The total score is over 20, while for each category is over 5. And when all added including the Diamond(z) (that is bonus points if any), gives the overall score for the producer. Oblige.

10 Disappointing Lyrics (Vol 1)

Welcome to the maiden edition of 10 Disappointing Lyrics. Before I proceed, I would like say that these are not bad artists. On the contrary, they are artists we have all come to love and respect. We are therefore disappointed that they would pen down such lines.

So every month, I will make a list of 10 disappointing lines from the Nigerian music scene. The period these lines were made public is irrelevant, so on the same list we could have a line from a song released in 2001 and another in 2011. No one would be spared from this list: No one! Without further ado, let’s proceed. Continue reading

Top 10 Nigerian Music Sites

I know this article will stir some controversy or at least get a few people upset. Truth is before we launched this blog/website, I wanted to know what the top Nigerian music sites have in common so I could learn from them. To my surprise, I couldn’t find any definitive list after searching Google for “Top Music Websites in Nigeria”. I altered the words several times using different key words, but still couldn’t find what I was looking for. What I found were comments on Nairaland and other forums from people Continue reading

How to Win Free Tickets

Get Arena

How to Win free Tickets (Get Arena)

It was a Thursday, the time around 11pm, Truth and I were furious fiving on Ozumba Mbadiwe Way, heading for Get Arena – an ultra-exclusive event; M.I & friends (not people with tickets!), was going down and we were definitely going to be part of it, traffic jam or not!

Like almost everything African, hang ( – friends hang out) didn’t get started till around 1:30am, a lot of things happened in the hour it took to set up and start – from admiring Ms’ white Range when he arrived Continue reading

10 Greatest Nigerian Rappers

Greatest/Best Nigerian Rappers

Before I shoot, I would like to say that the word “greatest” is quite different from the phrase “best at the moment”. If the latter were the case, I think we all know who the best rapper in Nigeria is as at 2011 (my lips are sealed!). For instance, Kanye West and Li’l Wayne might be hot right now, but they are definitely not as great as Jay-Z or Nas. That being said, let’s get on with it then.

Factors used to grade artists are:

  1.  A reasonable level of mainstream success.
  2.  At least two solo albums or two group albums should have been put out.
  3. Some degree of social influence.
  4. Longevity (years of relevance in the music Continue reading
