MicCheck12 Roundup (Week 17, 2012)

Welcome to MicCheck12 Roundup. Here, we bring you (every saturday) a summary of the best songs released for a particular week and the order in which they rank. Obviously, this means our daily reviews would be reduced, meaning we would be able to focus on videos, albums and our Special articles during weekdays.

This week we analyse eight songs and give you the ranking in ascending order.

(Note: There’s a table after the write up showing the ranking of the songs)

8. Bust Me Brain (Freestyle) – Iyanya (Produced by D’Tunes)

PREACH: Coming in at eighth place this week, Iyanya brings to us this feel good

tune/freestyle which honestly is just a waste of studio resources (and session). D’Tunes  comes correct with this nice beat only for Iyanya’s delivery and flow to be weak and poor with remixed lines of other songs. C’mon – a job he didn’t even do well.
This is only a regression from his “Kukere” joint which is doing well on the radio airwaves. Continue reading

6 ARTISTES TO BLOW UP IN 2012

Hey y’all. Hopefully everyone is doing alright? No? Comment below, I’m sure we can work something out. Cool? Hehe. So, unto the business of this article – we gon be looking at the next big things, or better still, acts on the Nigerian music scene. They already out there but I say next big ‘cause they’ve not being formally introduced into the industry. Formal introduction being the release of a studio album and all the activities that go with it. Such activities include radio tours, album launch etc.

These artistes are going to be responsible for the biggest concerts this year; selling out Eko Hotel. They gon be headlining shows, lurking on billboards and our TV screens.  We probably gon catch a parent humming their song or some wayward instrumentalist playing their tune during church service. Basically, these artistes would become a part of everything related to us ‘cause they’ve got that ish, that magic formula, and are not hesitating in using it on us.  Since we’ve settled that they have abilities, let’s have a quick run through of the criteria by which we would choose and rank these artistes.

Firstly, singles; what songs of theirs are doing damage to airwaves; on radio, streets, clubs etc. Secondly, collaborations; artistes must have featured (or being on the songs of other) notable artistes. This is a technique that helps build their brand, fan base and music. Lastly, their album is to be released this year; 2012 A.D. No need for a definite date here and the album is gotta be the first the artiste is putting out ever (mix tapes don’t count). Remember, they are ‘new’ artistes.

The list, ladies and gentlemen.

 6. MAY D

may d

May D, full name Awodunmila Akinmayokun Olusegun, is quite the crooner. With collaborations with P Square, Show Dem Camp, Akon etc. the heights this brother can reach are quite unknown. His hit singles are “Ilejo”, “Soundtrack” which are only a recent few out of a many Continue reading

Teeklef – Enroute

BLACK: This record is major. Teeklef just blew my mind with this record and I’m sure it’s gonna blow yours as well. Ima start with his voice, it’s awesome and it makes the chorus amazing. Basically, Enroute refers, to leaving this particular girl of his, in order to see things clearly, the little rap was cool as well, reminds me of a complete package of RnB, were you’ll have to sing all through and drop some 8bars to spice up the record. The production was Nice as well. An emotional person is gonna unwind and reminisce on this record, especially if this message is directed to you. It’s Klef Records Y’all. #BISmixtape coming soon.Good Job Teeklef. Listen and Enjoy!

NormBreaker – The Bridge Ft. Skales

Black: The Bridge is a duo comprising adekunleGOLD and Seyikeyz. The Bridge presents ‘NormBreaker’, their unique style is really impressing and inspiring. Basically, Normbreaker refers to ‘Change’, how they wanna make history and break boundaries. I love this record right here cause it doesn’t sound like any music you’ve heard, their voices are truly inspiring, good lyrics as well so as to support the message to
the populace at large. I’ll define this record as a ‘Gospel tune with the hip-hop feel’ and Skales delivered as well and it was really impressive. ‘They pay a lot of cash to see my face, I left a lot of legacy so I’m easy to trace it’s funny how I became the new craze, same industry, same life, new place’ . ‘I easily do things they don’t do, impossible is me tryna do you it’s more like me saying you ain’t my type I made it to the top without any high’ All I do is grow grow, grow, yesterday’s amateur is today’s Pro and I keep on doing better as the day goes, check my bank account I’m at the extra 0’s’. Skales balled on this record. Good job The Bridge. Good Job Sleekamo with the production. Listen and Enjoy!

MicCheck12 Roundup (WEEK 16, 2012)

Welcome to the maiden edition of MicCheck12 Roundup. Here, we bring you (every saturday) a summary of the best songs released for a particular week and the order in which they rank. Obviously, this means our daily reviews would be reduced, meaning we would be able to focus on videos, albums and our Special articles during weekdays.

For the “Pilot” of this series, we have decided not to rank this edition. But watch out for subsequent releases: in our usual fashion, no one will be spared. Without further ado, let’s get it on.

1. Love Me Tonight – Ikechukwu.

KYOS: WFA’s (World Famous Academy) finest has dropped another single “Love Me Tonight”. Great Techno and dancehall synchronization from Baby Fresh, I think it was top notch.

The energy that Ikechukwu brings to this track actually overshadows the scantiness in the song’s lyrics; he gave it much enthusiasm which is a good recipe for captivating fans to a track like this. Ikechukwu exhibits fusion with Hip Hop and R n B without a fuss. Quite frankly, I’ve seen Ikechukwu go harder than this, but do not disregard the fact that this is definitely gonna be banging real soon in Naija clubs. His igbo intonation and the ability to rhyme with his native tongue has always been something that stands him and Nigga Raw out in originality.

Few lines I still can’t figure out – “…Absolutely nothing, dem no dey rate…its thanksgiving, ‘cause you’re the turkey with Continue reading

Muna – Here to Stay Ft. IBK + Down Down Low

HERE TO STAY (REVIEW & DOWNLOAD)

BLACK: Body of a goddess with the mind of a hustler, Munachi Abi bangs on this one with the winner of the Enigma competition IBK the spaceship boy. IBK’s production is so unique and it’s nothing like the other producers around. Creativity defines his works. ‘Beauty queen turn rapper, they say I couldn’t make it maybe I should turn to the pastor’. That was just the intro to her first verse, with that been said, you should know what to expect on this record, so also, another thing you need to watch for on this track, was how IBK switched the beat from the chorus to the verses, the boy is ill. A lovely, calm and hot record I must say. Good job Muna I bet you’re really here to stay. Listen and Enjoy.

KYOS: Now i aint even gonna be biased just cause i got a crush on Muna but this right here……. Wow! Class at its best, a hustler’s ego redefines class in this track. Not to talk about the production, IBK killed it. Also, talk about adding a lil sense of humour to the beginning, nothing like i’v ever heared y’ll. Muna: I bet that you can see that i aint ever leaving till the lady with obesity be singing, simply reconstructing the phrase ’till the fat lady sings’, meaning it aint gonna happen; get it? Good job y’ll.

DOWN DOWN LOW (REVIEW & DOWNLOAD)

The two new records she put out basically describe the Artwork for the records. Here to Stay Ft. IBK was her goddess ego while Down Down Low refers to her hustler ego. I bet these artists especially the rappers now see the reason to put out records for the dance floor, Davido can explain that. Lol. They all need to be heard though. So this record is designed for the dance floor, I’m not feeling this one though, it feels like it wasn’t prepared for and she just needed to put something out quickly.  Good job Muna, at least we get to here from you again. Listen and Enjoy!

SCORE: 2.5/5

KYOS: I concur with Black on this one, it really sounds like a  record not well mastered. Just your regular party track. Nothing special to me, but hey, time was still committed into its prodiction so good job y’ll.

WillyBang – SYLLABLES Ft. Hakym Tha Dream

BLACK: Knight house and Serengeti presents WillyBang and Hakym respectively, as they happen to be the finest of their teams. Hakym delivered the Chorus very well, guess he can’t do without saying either ‘Limbo’ or ‘Lambo’ in songs nowadays, so there’s nothing wrong in calling him ‘Mr. Limbo Lamba’ lol. I love this record if not for anything, the combination of both artists on the record. ‘Syllables’ is still that record for the dance floor. The Chorus is Niceeeeeeee. ‘Syllable’ basically meant, no time for long talks, let’s just get down with each other and we could call it a Miracle *She say she want to blow, Na me be Banger*. I forsee it banging in clubs, if well promoted. Good job WillyBang and Hakym. Listen and enjoy.

SCORE: 3/5

KYOS: Another club banger? Well, we’ll soon find out. Not that i wanna discourage or anything but personally there’s nothing innovating nor capivating in this track, its just the regular Naija Pop. Top notch production though, i just feel they could have gone harder on this track, i mean c’mon with a beat like this, definitely should’v gone harder & as for Mr. Limbo Lamba, ‘Obmil Abmal’. Don’t even bother yourself tryna get what i just wrote, but if u really wanna know what i’m telling him give it a Lateral Thought.

Teeto Ceemos – GO DOWN Ft. Shank

BLACK: Fresh Boy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! , Teeto teams with Shank on this record ‘Go Down’. Tis just that song for the dance floor, because that’ll be the most important reason for a rapper to feature Shank. I still don’t feel Teeto has got the complete recipe, his rap pack ain’t just convincing enough, but it’s a good record, thanks to Shank for the magic he does on every record he features on. Shank be killing every record he’s on, this year might just be his. In anticipation for his debut album, this Single maybe that breakthrough record for Teeto. Go down, basically is about that Lady, you’ve been admiring and you wanna say something nice to her. “Slow down like Bobby Valentino let’s act the movie I’m Quentin Tarantino, I direct and I act, yeah I’m young and I’m restless, we the heads, we done and perfected”. Those were bars from Teeto’s second verse. Good job Teeto and Shank. I guarantee you’re gonna love this record. Listen and Enjoy.

SCORE: 4/5

KYOS: Teeto!!! Fresh boy, Fresh track & Fresh style. A record definitely for the dancefloor as my colleague has stated & yes, Shank did add that magic touch to the record there’s no disputing that. They both brought their ‘A game’ to this, nice job guys. But i’m still having issues with artists telling chicks to go down, i mean seriously, “una won make dem enter ground 1day?” :D Y’ll shouldn’t mind me jere. This right here is a jam no doubt.

Flowssick – LOWKEY (Remix) Ft. Kay switch, Shank & Ice Prince

BLACK: Flowssick…*Sighs* still not certain if I love his music yet, but this record right here is Niceeee, this remix is a tighter joint than the original which featured Kay switch last year. So ima give Props to Shank on this, his distinguished style which is outstanding and feels like magic whenever he’s on a record, actually made this record a banger. Flowssick did good as well, Kay switch too. Lowkey is just that record for the dance floor, it’s got the complete recipe to make you dance. Ice Prince Zamani, we can’t forget about his bars as well, the last verse is always the most anticipated, “She’s so hypnotic (micolo) me kolo when she look my optic” “Lowkey she go down low, that’s how we gon’ down low, like she’s tryna buckle her shoe”. Still the feel good rap and I was impressed at least on a dance record. E.kelly on the beat. Good joint right here. Listen and Enjoy!

SCORE: 3.5/5

KYOS: I guess some other artists cldn’t but also had give it to her LowKey :D Love the added touch that they put on it, though i must say that i didn’t really feel Shank up in here though. Overall, not a bad jam & this remix was definitely tighter.

Wizkid, Skales & Banky W (E.M.E Family) – BADDEST BOY

PREACH:  Presenting the official release of the E.M.E tune which leaked across the internet recently. This apparently has an additional verse from Banky W against that of Wizkid that leaked and is supposed to be the first single off the E.M.E family compilation – Empire Mates State Of Mind!!! .  Banky W definitely delivers as the BOSS of the clan with a flow like “Watch who you stepping to, y’all don’t wanna test me/one man wrecking crew, Lionel Messi”, while mister S to the K improves on his delivery and Star -boy wizzy gives it that head bumping favor with his hook, that’s so on point and makes him the no. 1 choice for hooks. Big shout-out to “Legendary beatz”. Listen up and enjoy!

SCORE: 3.5/5

Baddest Boy- Wizkid, BankyW and Skales

KYOS: Foremost, it should have been “We are the baddest bois’ since they were all reping themselves not one another, but hey this is showbiz, anything goes :D So the E.M.E family have officially got their fans hooked once more, typical from the crew. But i gotta say Wizkid & Skales sound a bit stereotype, but in the end who cares, as long as their fans aint complaining. Listen & bliss.
