MicCheck12 Roundup (Week 17, 2012)

Welcome to MicCheck12 Roundup. Here, we bring you (every saturday) a summary of the best songs released for a particular week and the order in which they rank. Obviously, this means our daily reviews would be reduced, meaning we would be able to focus on videos, albums and our Special articles during weekdays.

This week we analyse eight songs and give you the ranking in ascending order.

(Note: There’s a table after the write up showing the ranking of the songs)

8. Bust Me Brain (Freestyle) – Iyanya (Produced by D’Tunes)

PREACH: Coming in at eighth place this week, Iyanya brings to us this feel good

tune/freestyle which honestly is just a waste of studio resources (and session). D’Tunes  comes correct with this nice beat only for Iyanya’s delivery and flow to be weak and poor with remixed lines of other songs. C’mon – a job he didn’t even do well.
This is only a regression from his “Kukere” joint which is doing well on the radio airwaves. Continue reading

NIGEZIE Presents ‘Spirit of Naija’ – Sound Sultan, Femi, Bouqui, Jesse Jagz, Goldie, Brymo, Weird Mc, Sheyman.

BLACK: Pioneer 24/7 music channel in Nigeria, NIGEZIE, put together these mostly new artistes as part of their strategy for their new brand “Spirit of Naija” and they’re now showing on Channel 128 on Startimes TV. Well back to the song, I really don’t think it’s a good record, at least not good for a theme song. They just had it all crowded and in the end I couldn’t even figure out the good notes on the song. Apart from the distinguished voices of Brymo and Jesse Jags, I wasn’t cool with the rest. The beat and production was just wrong…What was Jesse thinking? I should give Nigezie a piece of advice if at all they wanna crowd a record with artists… I’m just gonna substitute a few artist with what they had. Instead of Bouqui – Eva, Weird Mc – Muna, Sheyman – Hakym the Dream. With that being said, I think it could have been a better joint. Listen and Enjoy!

GRANT: I disagree with Black on every point. The song is very good as far as theme songs go – it wouldn’t be much good, I’d have gladly listed some examples. Furthermore, the artiste line up may not be as impressive as in others but, these artistes be doing their thing and totally delivered on this joint. One thing I do hope for is the song doesn’t go down the same lane as other theme songs seem to have in terms of reach and longevity. So, y’all support the Nigerian brand – download and listen.

SCORE: 4/5

Jesse Jagz – Into You

Black: Chocolate city’s veteran dropped this record which is the first on the ‘Omo Abaga project’. Tis’ a lovely party jam which could be likened to a love song as well. The record has got the same vibe with ‘Pump it up’ and ‘Demo’, that’s Jesse in his mode. Well, there ain’t no need looking for metaphors or punch lines on this record. It’s just for your pleasure. Lovely record right here. Enjoy!

SCORE: 3.5/5

Kyos: Honestly, u’ve said it all Black. There’s nothing special or dynamic about this track, it was just Jesse Jagz in 1 of his club modes again really. So i’ll just reserve every other comment & let y’ll have a feel of the track.

Ajuju Goes Divine on New Single – “Chante”

Ajuju

Ajuju bangs with a new single ‘Chante’ which means ‘Praise God’.  ‘When you see the birds flying high up in the sky,all of them like to Chante’. You just wanna reference God with this music. First rap verse could have been a lot better though. Still a very good song all in all.

Score: 3/5

FYI: Ajuju is signed to Homeland Entertainment and released his debut album titled “#1″ (don’t worry, I’m not sure of the pronunciation either) in November 2009; and had hit singles like “Pass me d Mic” Ft. Jesse Jagz. The album took six years to make by the way.

The M. I. Guide To Successful Marketing

It was December 2008, Christmas was around the corner and I was at that period, listening to Mode9′s Paradigm Shift CD. As a Modey fan, I was feeling the album but just out of curiosity, I searched online for the album review to see what fellow rap heads were saying about it

M. I.

M. I.

People were feeling it as expected but I was shocked when I saw the following comment on a hip hop forum:

“I love Mode9. He should be the second best rapper in Nigeria right after MI”

My jaws dropped because I follow hip hop forums a lot and I have never heard anybody who loves Mode9, rate any rapper in the country above him. It must be “Personal Opinion”, I said to myself. But to my surprise Continue reading

The Production List – TPL (10 Best Nigerian Producers)

So many lists exist and I’m sure by now you would be bored with yet another one. Which begs the question- What is T.P.L? T.P.L. is a sort of guideline; a manual as to who is who as far as production goes in Nigeria. It encompasses the milestones both past and current and perhaps yet to be ascertained future of every producer in Nigeria. And though this list is not exhaustive, it is however moderate and thoroughly screened to accommodate a selective few out of the many producers that abound in Nigeria.

It begins with the stellar list that contains the very best the country has to offer as at now, detailing every prominent event that might have led them there. This means that this list mainly and in fact accurately judges the stellar candidates based on their individual milestones and achievements in whatever capacity and most importantly judges them based on their talents (repertoire), amount of hits (Hit Factory), Critical Acclaim and body of work as regards spread and volume (Prolificacy).

Like I noted above, this list is not all inclusive but moderately trimmed due to the available spaces (10). This affected the choice of future position on this list, yes, this list has a high predictive value i.e. we envisage that come next year this list may not really change and if it does the better. Due to the constraints listed above, we made some moderations and gave nods to producers who we anticipate may make the future list (Bubbling Under), others who are not notable now but were a force then and can sense their upward and steady revival (Relics) and those who are coming up the ranks with blistering pace.

The total score is over 20, while for each category is over 5. And when all added including the Diamond(z) (that is bonus points if any), gives the overall score for the producer. Oblige.
